Timiskaming In 1849 an Algonquin Indian reserve settled north of Notre-Dame-du-Nord. The inhabitants are Timiskaming First Nation. Territoire Timiskaming First Nation is adjoining the municipality of Notre-Dame-du-Nord. The area covers 2,428.08 hectares. You can enter the reserve by road 101. The road network includes asphalted roads (5,860 m) and gravel roads (4,070 m). There are 155 houses in our community. Population We have 520 people living in the reserve and 944 people living outside the reserve. Description Timiskaming is one of the nine Algonquin communities of Quebec. Timiskaming is an Algonquin word meaning "very deep waters" and is also used, in a different form, to name the whole Témiscamingue region. When the reserve was first set up, the area was of 15,000 hectares. Then, parcels of land were given up to companies and individuals. The languages spoken at home are Algonquin, English and French. Administration The community is administered by the Timiskaming Band Council, which is led by Chief Carole McBride and 6 members of the Council. Council Industry sectors In Timiskaming, we have an agriculture industry as well as forestry industry which is represented by a forest cooperative and also construction. Some members of the community do trapping and art works and handicraft are also produced. About ?? people are employed. We have heavy machinery and construction enterprises and services. There are also stores that sell art works and handicraft, one gas station, three convenience stores, and four taxi services of which three were accepted as emergency transports by the band council. Education About a hundred students of preschool and primary school levels attend the Kiwetin school, which is located on the reserve area. About twenty other students of primary school levels and fifty of high school levels attends a provincial school and so depend of the Ministère de l'Éducation. Services Police services are provided by the Amerindian Police Council. Fire protection is part of an agreement with the municipality of Notre-Dame-du-Nord. The reserve has a water supply system and a wastewater system and also its own refuse collection service. Hydro-Québec supplies the electricity. The sanitary center is run by Health Canada.
